This is a translation of the ancient story of 'The Origin of the Vel'. This historical parable was passed down the generations via the oral tradition and the earliest written translation of this is from the 2nd Century BCE. We have used several texts/sources in the translation including Veliyyaan from the archives of the Aatmaani School (200 AD) and Veliyyaanal from the Aardra School (50 BCE). We have also translated the dialogue sections from the ancient Dravidian Aaiyyanist play: Veyallaya (600 AD). We also liaised with several other Aaiyyanist schools to give a broad overview of the essential truth that is encompassed in this translation into English. If you feel that we have misrepresented the essence of 'The Origin of the Vel', please do contact us and we will convene with you and your School to try to iron out any discrepancies in the next edition.
As this story is very ancient, elements of the tale have found itself inserted into many different folk tales from around the world (including Asian, European, African and South American folk stories). Thus elements of this narrative will feel recognisable to many peoples around the world. This is the nature of Dravidian history, as it keeps reminding us that we are in fact all: One.
This translation has been created by the Aaiyyan World Foundation and with the help of various Aaiyyanist Schools such as the Aatmaani School and Aardra Schools. Many Aaiyyanist researchers worked on this collectively, so to single out any individuals or groups would be disingenuous to the rest of the individuals who worked on this.
